The Undiscovered Tokyo Tours will take you into the rabbit hole, and show you undiscovered Tokyo so you can get a feel of a slower, local life. A Day of Discoveries (6 hours)

 

This tour focuses on West Tokyo, mainly on the west side of the Shinjuku station. Many places remain that will take you straight back to the 1970s, while Shinokubo will show you a more multiethnic picture of Japan. We want you to enjoy Tokyo’s little-known cultural legacies as well as Japan’s possible multiethnic future.

 

Koenji became a hub of counterculture led by hippies as there used to be many rock and folk cafes in the 60s and 70s, and there are still a few cafes left that retained their retro atmosphere. There are also 10 market streets, where local residents go for daily grocery shopping and to hang out with their neighbors. Why don’t we try some locals’ favorite snacks here?

 

Next up is Nakano, which developed especially in the 60s and 70s and never changed its tunes. Nerd heaven Nakano Broadway draws adorable has-been otaku who love collectible stamps, coins, manga, or train models. Let’s get lost in this maze of quirky shops!

 

Then it’s on to our last stop, Shinokubo, which is the most multicultural and multiethnic district in Japan. While the eastern side is dedicated to Chinese and Southeast Asian communities, on the west it is everything Korean. You will find Okubo a perfect last stop for this tour!

 

A Night of Discoveries (3 hours)

 

Golden Gai and Omoide Yokocho are for drinks, Kagurazaka and Ginza are for high-end cuisine, and Roppongi is for nightclubs if you are looking for Tokyoesque nightlife. But there is more! In this nightly food tour, we will take you to locals’ favorite places that tourists would not easily find on their own. We will take you to small restaurants with a contemporary style and haunts with a traditional atmosphere!

 

We will first enjoy some small bites of authentic local Asian street food in the most multiethnic community in Japan, Okubo. You can try foods like freshly pan-fried Chinese dumplings with soup fillings, South Asian-spiced chicken skewers. All of these are for long-term immigrants living in Tokyo, not adapted to the Japanese taste.

 

We will then move on to Nakano for the main course, where there are many Izakaya restaurants that retained their original atmospheres from the post-war era. You will get to try traditional Japanese tapas while enjoying some great accompanying sake or beer.

 

We will end the night in a very interesting bar for a special experience. Are you ready for a night to remember?
