Tsukiji, the former biggest fish market in Japan, is a popular tourist destination for both domestic and international tourists. The main area of the market is quite overwhelming, however, few tourists, both domestic and international, know the interesting back streets. Here, local Tsukiji fish market workers come for breakfast, and the area is not busy while it still boasts nostalgic architecture with a real Showa retro atmosphere. We recommend you to enjoy the local workers’ favorites grilled fish platter, a sashimi platter, or a sushi platter for lunch here!

 

 

After enjoying hidden gems in Tsukiji, you will make the short train ride to Nihonbashi which is locally known as the mecca of high-end luxury department stores. But your purpose won’t be shopping here. Instead, you will get to see the gigantic wooden statue of goddess Kannon inside the department store. If you’re lucky, you may enjoy a pipe organ performance coming from behind the statue. What’s more in Nihonbashi, there is a traditional shrine squarely surrounded by modern buildings where the first shogunate-sanctioned lottery ticket was sold in Tokyo back in the 18th century. Here, your guide will briefly describe how that went in those days.

 

 

After sinking yourself in eclectic atmospheres of cyberpunk in Nihonbashi, it is time to go to Ginza, another mecca of luxury department and brand stores in Tokyo. But again, you won’t be following the tourist crowds into the shops. The most interesting points in Ginza are actually maze-like backstreets snaking behind the buildings.

 

 

There are shrines, dingy bars and pubs with atmospheres of the latter half of the 20th century, and upscale traditional Japanese restaurants that double as hide-out for tycoons. The tour will end with a beautiful panoramic twilight view from a rooftop garden of a cutting-edge, modern building in the center of Ginza.
